The Netherlands - Visas and Permits

If you want to work and/or re-locate to The Netherlands, then below you can find out whether you are eligble, how much it will cost and where you can go to find out further information on how to apply. According to your citizenship, the duration and purpose of your stay in The Netherlands, a visa may or may not be required before departure.

What are Visas and Work Permits?

Firstly, here is an explanation of what a visa, a work permit and immigration actually is.
- A visa is an official authorization appended to a passport, permitting entry into and travel within a particular country or region.
- A work permit is a generic term for a legal authorization, which allows a person to take employment. It is most often used in reference to instances where a person is given permission to work in a country where one does not hold citizenship,
- Immigration is the act of immigrating; the passing or coming into a country for the purpose of permanent residence.
It will depend on how long you want to go for, why you want to go and certain other factors as to which of the visas you must apply for.

Visa Exemptions

Visas are required by everyone visiting The Netherlands except the following, for stays of up to three months:

1. nationals of Britain, Australia, Canada, USA, Other EU members and Japan.
2. nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Iceland, Israel, Korea (Rep), Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Switzerland, Uruguay, Vatican City and Venezuela;
3. transit passengers continuing their journey to/from other Schengen countries within 72 hours by the same or first connecting aircraft.

Types of Visas and Costs

A uniform type of visa, the Schengen visa, is issued for the relevant Schengen member nationals, for tourist, business and private visits. Short-stay (for up to three months), Multiple-entry (for three months, one year or five years) and Transit visas are available for a handling fee of approximately €35, although prices are subject to change.

Validity

Visas are normally valid for the duration of stay, with a maximum of three months (90 days) per six months. The visa issuing authorities will want to see the flight tickets to check arrival and departure dates. Transit visas are valid for single- or multiple-entries of maximum five days per entry, including the day of arrival. Visas cannot be extended; a new application must be made each time.
